It is an interesting dynamic that happens when you are not quite as sure of your fitness as usual. You are more likely to let go and use technique as your tool to make boat speed. It seems counterintuitive but when you put a premium on the design on the stroke and let the engine work within the design it produces the greatest sustainable speed. One of my best friends and engineer, Colin Touhey, sent me an article about how Mac Wilkins, an Olympic discus thrower, had to "let go" and acknowledge rythym and technique as the most effective ways to achieve the longest throws. This might be the easiest yet most difficult concept to understand about rowing and maybe just life in general. It's difficult because its such a fine line. If you let go too much, you will be bringing up the rear. The challenge is to be loose, dynamic, and fluid with aggression.

Anyways, I had a good lead at the 1k and cruised in to a victory and qualification for the final. My system did not feel great by any means but I was definitely in a much better place than I was the day before. After the race, I felt like I recovered well and did not feel like it took too big of a toll on me. One of the other semis went a few seconds faster than me so it will be fun to see if I can close the gap! Either way, I'm really excited to be enjoying racing. The single is just a little speed work before the Champ 8 on Friday!
