Can Henley
Believe it or not I made it to Canada and am preparing for my final in the Senior Men's single! How did that happen!? It really has been a fun last few days. I have enjoyed rowing because it is fun and for no other reason. It's been very refreshing to be at a race like this where nothing is really on the line. Sure, everyone takes it seriously, and for some people it's the culmination of the summer, but compared to rowing at Trials, I feel like I am rowing in Blue Gold Bantam( a small fun regatta held at trinity every year). I have a whole bag of excuses of why I am not in peak form right now so it really takes the edge off! Haha.
Anyways, I felt pretty awful when I got here because of jet lag, etc. on Tuesday, I rallied and got into qualifying position in my heat to advance to the semi. I had no expectation of being fast in Tuesday, I just wanted to move on. The idea is that hopefully I'll feel a little better each day and MAYBE by the final I might be ready to go.
Because of my third place finish in my heat I got a pretty brutal draw in the semi, but to be expected. If you want to win the event you have to beat everyone , so why not in the semi? I was definitely feeling better physically than the previous day which was certainly a confidence booster but I did not expect to be as fast out of the blocks as I was. I was in land 2, an inside and unflavored lane because of the current, but somehow I launched off the start and was up a length on the field after 250. This was a huge surprise because I was planning on relaxing off the start and working my way back through the field during the base. Instead, I found my self up and moving away.
