NSR 1: Day one
Pretty sloppy out on the course today. At the crack of dawn, the wind was howling and the waves were rolling. I would say this type of condition is my least favorite to row in. It's unstable and dangerous. You really have to keep your wits about you. Trying to go fast early is death in conditions like this and I have learned it over and over again. So, knowing that, I wanted to put a premium on technique and rhythm and just have a solid piece well within myself. I rolled off the start and got right to base cadence. I was rowing 32-33 spm and just trying to row above the conditions, keeping the system going. But not getting ahead of myself. The second 500 was pretty challenging and ended up being my slowest 500. Lots of side chop. I thought I did a decent job of not getting freaked out if I took a bad stroke, just moved on to the next one. It was a pretty consistent row overall with nothing too special. When it comes down to it, the time trial is just a necessary step before racing actually begins. This evening will be the start of the fight.
That being said, it was nice to see that all of the Craftsbury guys are in the mix. All of the guys qualified for the next round and took first, fourth, eighth, and ninth places respectively. Great to see. My biggest fear in Clemson was that we were rowing in a vacuum and we knew how we stacked up with each other but not with everyone else in the country. It's cool that the GRP group is in the top 10 so far. I think our strength as a group is our ability to race the piss out of it and enjoy every moment of it. I would think that quality would show itself more in the head to head rounds rather than the time trial.
Bottom line is this is the fun part. I was getting so antsy before racing yesterday because I just want to get this thing going! I have a lot of energy I need to get OUT!
Tough going for my brother Tom today. He has been injured for about a week now and has barely rowed in the last week. He probably should not have raced today but good on him for trying. Hopefully he will get healthy and keep going. He is a force when he is healthy.
Results and schedule can be found at usrowing.org. Heats tonight at 5.30.
