On to the semis
Obviously very pleased to have made it through to the AB semis yesterday; however, we have plenty to address looking forwards to Friday's race.
As a crew, we felt pretty drained sitting at the startline before the rep. It was very hot, very humid, and I especially did not do a very good job continuing to refuel as we warmed up. We were on the water for far too long before our race and that caught up with us. Like I said, very happy to be in the top 12 with a chance to go up against the top doubles in the world in the Semis. But, yesterday showed us that if we are not careful, we can underperform quite a bit. The race felt like if you were forced to do a 2k erg piece in a steam room. We both felt quite good in the warm up, but after 40 min on the water, we were pretty depleted. In order to hold our own in the Semis, we will need to show up with our full bag of tricks, nothing less. So today we are focusing on eating really well, staying indoors, and drinking a lot of fluids. I was pretty wrecked after the rep yesterday even though from an outsider's perspective it probably didn't look like too difficult of a race. We promptly got flushed out by the great PT staff the US team has here and then sat in an ice pool. It really did the trick. But boy, I was hurting.
I honestly feel like we have some good speed to bring to the table in the semi on Friday. It is obviously a very tall order to make it into the A final, but thats still our goal. We will throw everything we have at these guys and see where we stack up. This year is a lot about measuring up against the best, getting our margin to the top, and then going back to work next year to close that gap. That is not to take the focus away from this year, in fact it hones our focus on this year. We are just going out there, no pressure, making our boat fly, and then see where we stand right now. But we also have the perspective that this is a process and that we are trying to learn from every mistake/shortcoming to inform us better for the Olympic Final in Rio. This is the most specific training session we can do in preparation for the 2016 Olympics. 2000 meters all out against the best doubles in the world. Perfect.
Our semi is stacked. Top 3 to A final.
USA, Serbia, Norway, GB, Germany, Argentina.
Our race will be on streaming live on the World Rowing website, so tune in! It is around 1.30 pm here, so 12.30 am in the states. Enjoy a nice friday night and then have a nice night cap of World Championship sculling!
