Things are heating up here. Well, actually the temperature has gone down quite a bit but the regatta is heating up!

The opening ceremony is tonight along with the heat Draw. So by this afternoon we will know who we are racing on Monday.

We have had a few good rows over the last couple of days. Yesterday morning we did our last race rehearsal pieces before racing on monday. We did 2 x 500m, one starting, one finishing. Yeah, I know, lots of work, right? Looking at times is a lost cause right now because sometimes the current is going and sometimes its not, so we have been trying to keep the blinders on. That being said, we went 1.28.9 off the start, which while it seems fast, is probably right around what we need to be going. We paddled down the course and did 250 at base, then 250 sprint. We went 1.30.5. So decent times, I'd say the final 500 is much more honest than the first, in terms of flow. Either way, there was not a lot in the morning, but in the afternoon the flow was huge. As far as I know, there will be no flow around racing.

In the afternoon we went out for an 8k swing row. We have been talking a lot about just making sure we are using our body weight to move the boat and getting easy speed at all times. I could care less how fast we are going at steady state, we just need to be rowing a rhythm that will move on its own, without power. The type of rhythm that will move in the third 500. I think we have done well to always remember than when we are out there. Its obvious that a lot of the great crews on the water are not overly concerned with their paddling speed in the lead up to racing. They are not trying to prove themselves to anyone. The time to prove themselves comes on race day. The days before racing is for solidifying rhythm and increasing awareness of the things that move the boat and ignoring the things that don't.

Pretty sure that the NZL guys were trying to get some data on us this morning for their training partners in the 2x. Eric Murray came up to me with his coach, Noel Donaldson, and asked if we wanted to do a couple pieces with them today. I was happy to, but we were supposed to keep it easy today. They do almost all their workouts with the NZL 2x, who is the top boat in our event right now. While its flattering to have them ask us, I'm happy to remain the only unknown in the M2x field going into racing. Murray is a pretty hilarious guy though. Its always a treat to watch those guys redefine speed with a smile on their faces.
