Really enjoyed being in Putney for the Green Mtn Head this Sunday. I love the low key nature of the race. No hoopla, no hassle, just good water, good people, and good fun. I really wasn't expecting much out of myself at this race, I just wanted to go race hard and use it as a hard piece in the build up to the Charles. I surprised myself with a little hidden fitness and was able to row a pretty consistent piece in the single. It seems to me like my base speed is better after a full summer of 2k racing. A good sign especially after taking a few weeks off. I think as the fall goes along I will be able to row a little higher and squeeze some more speed out of it, but for now I was pleased with the way I raced and that I still had some fitness/technique in reserve from the summer.
The results:
John 19.06
Hugh 19.25
Josh 19.34
Steve 19.41

Excited to keep getting some base fitness back and see how fast I can make the 1x go this fall. I don't have any real goals for this fall other than improvement, by whatever margin. Just move in the right direction. For the next few weeks leading into the Charles that will still take the form of base work, easy miles, and strength. Basically all the things that get put to the side when preparing and tapering for 2k races.
This morning we had the roll, run, row. A competition between the skiers and the rowers. Honestly, it is incredibly painful. It was about 40 min above 180 HR. Ouch. I came in 4th place. Gordon Vermeer, one of the elite skiers won. Kyle Lafferty was the first rower , coming in second place. Definitely a nice result for Kyle.
I am pretty beat up from it. Hopefully we can go easy the next few days leading into Henley On Hosmer, which should feature some tough match ups. There's no doubt about it, we race a lot up here. But it keeps it fun. It's what its all about, just racing it up. Sure, we probably would have been better off taking a few easy days after the Green mtn head, but ah, who cares! ? It's the fall. I'm thankful to be in a place that keeps it light and fun.
I usually try to refrain, but I'm feeling a nap coming today...
Here's a shot of the screen after the 20k ss erg I did last week. It's a good early season marker, hopefully will keep bringing that down as the fall and winter go on. I love being on the water obviously, but the erg is a great objective indicator for fitness and pacing. So its good to keep in touch with it.
