This weekend was the Craftsbury Marathon. There was much to celebrate on this beautiful morning in the Northeast kingdom, but sadly, no one will remember the day for how many people enjoyed themselves, how well run the race was, how much hard work was put in by the Craftsbury staff and volunteers, or even how many people finished the 50 kilometer race; people will only remember that one person did not finish. Torin Tucker, a Dartmouth undergrad skier, collapsed and died on the third lap of the race while holding onto second place. At the top of a steep climb on the far side of the course, he collapsed and was quickly attended to by medical staff and other skiers. From what I have heard, no medical expertise could have saved him. He was pronounced dead after about twenty minutes of life-saving attempts. When I train or race, I push myself under the assumption that if I can just endure the pain, I will be OK. No matter how much it hurts, I will live. This weekend's events have really made me question if that's the case. It's made me question a lot.
